Between, my day job, spending time with my family, taking care of the business, and trying to get just enough sleep to stay functional, I used to feel like I never had enough time to make pots.
But what if I told you that now I spend less time in the pottery studio but actually produce more?
It’s true. Of course, a big part of my increase in efficiency is just growing as a potter. But I’ve also discovered some things that have really helped me ramp up my output during an often limited time working with clay. So here are 5 things that have helped me make the most of my time in the pottery studio.

A Bit More About Me
I’m currently a full time teacher at a local elementary school. I love spending time with my family. I’m a maker of various things. For a while I tried to do it all: photography, design, painting, ceramics. But a few years ago I decided to focus mostly on pottery. I still get to incorporate many other creative fields as a potter but with the limited time I have, my top creative priority has become working with clay.
As a part time potter, I have to make the most of my time in the pottery studio. I’ve gotten better at this over the years, especially as I’ve gotten better at the 5 things mentioned above. I hope some of these ideas can help you as well.
My Pottery Studio
At the time of writing this article, my pottery studio takes up about half of our basement. But if you consider my photo booth, storage shelves for pots, and packing and shipping area… my wife has conceded almost the entire basement to my creative endeavors.
There is not a lot of space to move around but I have everything I need. In the near future I hope to transfer my studio into a new, upgraded space. For now, I feel fortunate just to have everything that I need to make pots.
